Kimbo Slice

Kimbo Slice is a hit sensation for The Ultimate Fighter reality TV show. Here are some interesting facts about Kimbo that most people don't know. Kimbo's real name is Kevin Ferguson. Kimbo was born in Nassau, Bahamas. Kimbo got his popularity through street fights that were promoted through the internet. The name "Kimbo" was a childhood nick name, and after his first taped street fight, he cut his opponent over his right eye giving him the nickname "Slice". The rest is history. Everyone knows that Kimbo excells at striking, but his ground game is his weakness. Ironically enough, Kimbo's cousin, is Rhadi Ferguson (pictured below) who happens to be an Olympian Judoka. Judo players have excellent ground control and submissions...it might be wise for Kimbo to take a lesson from his cousin. Kimbo's only street fight loss on tape was against Sean Gannon.

Submission Effects wants to give Kimbo props for having excellent punching skills. However, we do recognize that Kimbo needs some help on the ground...so Submission Effects would like to support Kimbo as he develops his ground game. Kimbo, shoot me an email or call me for a free Ju-Jitsu Gi and 6 months of free Japanese Ju-Jitsu training.

Shogun Fights sponsored by SFX

Flying knees, heavy punches and elaborate limb twisting have made mixed martial arts one of the nation's fastest-growing sports attractions, but Maryland has steered clear of the spectacle - until now and Submission Effects is sponsoring it!

The state's first sanctioned mixed martial arts card, made up mostly of local fighters, is scheduled for Oct. 24 at 1st Mariner Arena, according to Patrick Pannella, executive director of the Maryland State Athletic Commission. The event will be the culmination of a long battle by local trainers and fans to gain acceptance.

You can expect to see every fighter wearing fight gloves by SFX. These are going to be custom gloves made just for this event. You will also notice that the staff will be wearing Submission Effects shirts too.

Check out http://shogunfights.com for tickets and info.

MMA Gloves in RED by SFX

MMA is unique in the fact that competitors use 4oz gloves. Boxers use 16oz gloves which provide a TON of protection, because all boxers do is punch each other. Things change when you can kick, knee, elbow, throw, slam, choke, and lock joints. Mixed martial artists need a glove to protect their hands while giving them the agility to grapple. This glove is designed specifically for the striking mixed martial artists. This glove has a unique 3/4 finger design which gives a little more protection than the standard 1/2 finger glove. This gives ultimate protection for punches, back fists, and hammer fists. The palm design is one piece with a thumb hole which prevents ripping and tearing (a common defect in gloves with open palm or straps). Finally, a mma glove made for the heavy striker!
The gloves are avaiable for pre-order now and will ship by mid-August.

Barnett caught cheating!

What does this needle and Josh Barnett have in common? They both contain Sterioids.

Josh Barnett tested positive for steroids which cost him the fight of his life. Barnett was scheduled to fight Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor happens to be the best fighter known to mma. It's too bad that Barnett lowered his standards to steroids. Submission Effects does not support steroids. Submission Effects supports fighters who are willing to do all the hard training themselves. It is lazy, cheap, and fake to use steroids...it's like having someone else fight for you.

SFX would like to honor all fighters (professional or not) who train naturally. Anyone can cheat to become a famous fighter. SFX fighters value their personal integrity above becoming a famous fighter.

White MMA Gloves by SFX

Mixed martial arts (MMA) started off as a bare knuckle competition. While this proved to be extremely devastating for the person getting hit, the person doing the hitting often ended up with broken knuckles and fingers. Before too long, mma venues world wide made gloves mandatory. A new glove was quickly designed. The purpose was to protect the hands of the striker, as opposed to protecting the face of the victim. The most common glove is an open palm, half finger, 4-6 ounce glove. This gives padding for the strikes while leaving lots of room for the grappler to lock and choke his opponent.

Submission Effects now has competition legal gloves. They will be available for purchase in August of this year. Don't be decieved by the gloves you buy in the store, those are often cheap gloves for the typical consumer. SFX's mma gloves are for the cage fighter. Made of high quality leather and the perfect fit, these gloves will inflict the most damage while protecting your hands. Knock outs come much easier with these gloves than the typical store bought mma glove.

Go to www.submissioneffects.com to pre-order your pair of SFX mma gloves.

Brock Lesnar Vs. Frank Mir UFC 100

If you were to judge the fight between Lesnar and Mir by appearance alone...you would give it to Lesnar. However, in their last fight, Frank Mir showed the world (once again) that technique beats size. Mir put Lesnar in a ankle lock (submission) and made him tap. The power of Ju-jitsu worked in the first UFC and we are still seeing it today. The BIG QUESTION is "Has Brock Lesnar learned from his loss against Frank Mir?" We will find out July 11th.

Who do you think will win this fight?

Lyoto Machida vs Rashad Evans

SFX wants to congratulate Lyoto Machida on his victory over Rashad Evans at UFC 98. Rashad is a fierce competitor, but Lyoto was able to knock him out in the second round. A knock out is one of the greatest submissions a martial artists can deliever, and it is a crowd favorite as well. All of us here at SFX hope to see Rashad and Lyoto back in the cage soon! Train harder fight smarter.

Position before Submission

SFX promotes character and virtue along with hard martial arts training. Patients is a virtue, and this is where the phrase "position before submission" comes into play. So often a competitor will try to apply a choke, lock a joint, or land that knock out blow before he is in the proper position. This is unfortunate, because just a little bit of patients would have allowed for a submission. If you are a martial artists, you know exactly what I am talking about...trying to sink in the rear choke without having both leg hooks in, trying to bar an arm before securing it first, throwing that left hook without setting it up with a combination, even bridging out of the mount before you take away their post. Take the time to set your position before attempting the submission. Practice patients. Easier said than done, but it will be worth your while.

SFX vs TAPOUT

What sets Submission Effects apart from the rest of the competition?

SFX believes that a disciplined fighter can be confident without being cocky (or American arrogant). Anyone can put on a "tough guy" t-shirt and look like a hard knock, but SFX fighters let the cage define their fighting abilities. The SFX apparel makes them look good. Submission Effects believes that martial artists can be ferocious in the cage yet choose a lifestyle that upholds character and morals. Submission Effects sees women as beautiful creations of God that deserve to be treated as princesses (not merely as objects of sexuality).
So what sets us apart? Well just look at the message on the apparel...it speaks for itself.

Submission Effects:
Confident, not cocky.

The Genesis
